Laugh Lines Treatment in Singapore
Laugh lines, also called nasolabial folds, are not simply an empty groove that needs to be filled. They are shaped by facial movement, midface support, skin quality, fat-pad position and age-related collagen loss.
At Aquila, we generally do not use hyaluronic-acid filler as the default strategy for directly filling laugh lines. Our preference is to assess why the fold has deepened, restore support where appropriate and use collagen-stimulating treatments when the goal is gradual, natural-looking improvement rather than simply adding more gel into a mobile crease.

Why laugh lines become deeper
A nasolabial fold is a normal anatomical boundary. It becomes more noticeable when the cheek and midface lose support, when facial fat compartments change position, when skin becomes less elastic and when repeated smiling compresses the same mobile zone over many years.
That means two people with equally visible laugh lines may need very different treatment. One may mainly have skin laxity and collagen loss. Another may have midface deflation. Another may have a strong dynamic fold that is present because of normal facial movement rather than a true volume deficit.
For this reason, our consultation looks at the cheek, pyriform area, midface projection, skin thickness, facial movement, asymmetry and the depth of the fold at rest and during smiling.

Why HA filler is not our default treatment for laugh lines
Direct filling can become heavy
The nasolabial fold moves every time you smile, speak or chew. Repeatedly adding volume directly into this mobile crease can create puffiness or a visibly filled appearance rather than restoring the architecture around it.
HA may persist longer than expected
Modern imaging studies show that cross-linked HA can remain detectable much longer than the old assumption of a simple 6–12 month disappearance. Ultrasound and MRI studies also show that injected material can spread or diffuse within tissue. Migration is a recognised complication, although it does not occur in every patient.
More product is not always better
If residual filler is still present, repeated top-ups may accumulate and change facial proportions. A line may temporarily look shallower while the surrounding midface gradually becomes broader, heavier or less natural.
Stimulate collagen and restore support
Collagen stimulators are different from conventional HA gels. Depending on the material, they can provide varying degrees of immediate structural effect while also triggering a controlled tissue response that promotes new collagen formation over time.
The purpose is not to inject every centimetre of the fold. Instead, treatment may be planned around areas that contribute to the fold—such as the lateral cheek, midface, pyriform region or selected subcutaneous planes—while respecting vascular anatomy and facial movement.
- Improve tissue quality and firmness gradually rather than relying only on instant volume.
- Restore selected structural support around the fold instead of simply tracing the crease with filler.
- Use conservative amounts and reassess before adding more treatment.
- Keep facial movement and normal expression rather than trying to eliminate every line.
Which collagen stimulators may be considered?
The exact material is chosen according to anatomy, skin quality, desired degree of structural support, treatment plane, previous injectables and the patient's tolerance for gradual versus immediate change.
How we plan treatment
Laugh-line treatment is planned from the face outward, not from the crease inward. The doctor first decides whether the main driver is skin ageing, midface volume change, deep structural support, dynamic movement or a combination.
When we would be cautious
- Previous filler in the area when the type, amount or location is uncertain.
- Active skin infection, dental infection or significant inflammation around the treatment zone.
- History of problematic nodules, granulomatous reactions or difficult prior injectable complications.
- Expectation of completely removing a normal fold or obtaining an immediate surgical-level change.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, depending on the treatment material and clinical context.
- Patients who may be better served by lifting, energy-based tightening or surgery rather than more injectable volume.
What happens during treatment?
Before
The doctor reviews previous fillers, medical history, skin condition and facial movement. If residual HA filler is suspected and materially affects planning, imaging or a staged approach may be discussed.
During
After cleansing and anaesthesia as appropriate, the selected collagen stimulator is placed in the planned tissue planes using a needle, cannula or a combination, depending on anatomy and material.
After
Swelling, tenderness, bruising and temporary asymmetry can occur. Some materials require specific aftercare or massage instructions; others do not. Follow the instructions given for the material actually used.
Softer folds without an overfilled face
A successful result usually means the laugh line still exists but is less deep, the transition from cheek to mouth looks softer, and the face does not look wider or heavier from repeated line filling.
The speed and duration of improvement depend on the material, dose, anatomy, age, collagen response, lifestyle and whether other treatments are combined. Some people need a staged series rather than a single session.
- Gradual softening of static fold depth.
- Improved skin firmness and quality around the midface.
- Better structural support without chasing the crease with repeated gel.
- Natural facial movement preserved.
Not every laugh line is an injectable problem
Some patients have significant skin laxity, descent or skeletal change that cannot be corrected adequately with collagen stimulation alone. Depending on the examination, the plan may include energy-based tightening, resurfacing, facial contouring or surgical lifting rather than simply adding injectable material.
Laugh lines treatment FAQs
Are laugh lines the same as nasolabial folds?
Yes. Laugh lines commonly refers to the nasolabial folds running from the side of the nose toward the corners of the mouth. They are a normal facial feature that can deepen with age, movement and structural change.
Why does Aquila avoid routine HA filler directly into laugh lines?
Because the fold is a mobile anatomical boundary rather than simply an empty defect. Repeated direct filling can overcorrect the line, residual HA may persist longer than expected, and diffusion or migration can contribute to heaviness or altered contour in some patients. We prefer to assess the structure around the fold and use collagen stimulation where appropriate.
Does HA filler always migrate?
No. Migration is a recognised complication, not an inevitable outcome. HA fillers are widely used and generally safe when appropriately selected and injected. The concern is that repeated direct filling of a mobile fold may not be the best long-term strategy for every patient.
Which collagen stimulator is best?
There is no universally best material. PCL, PDO/PPDO, PDLLA, PLLA and CaHA differ in mechanism, structural effect, longevity, handling and complication profile. The choice depends on anatomy, treatment plane, previous injectables and the desired result.
How quickly will I see results?
Some materials provide an early structural effect, while true collagen remodelling develops gradually over weeks to months. The timeline depends on the material and treatment plan.
Can collagen stimulators be dissolved?
Unlike hyaluronic acid, most collagen-stimulating materials do not have a simple dissolving enzyme. Careful product selection, conservative dosing and correct placement are therefore important.
Can laugh lines be removed completely?
That is usually neither realistic nor desirable. A normal nasolabial fold is part of facial expression. The aim is to soften excessive depth and improve the surrounding tissue while keeping the face natural.

Hyaluronic-acid fillers remain appropriate for many aesthetic indications; the approach described here reflects Aquila Medical Center's preference for treating laugh lines through anatomical assessment, structural support and collagen stimulation rather than routine direct line filling. All injectable treatments carry risks including swelling, bruising, infection, nodules, vascular compromise and unsatisfactory contour. Suitability depends on anatomy, medical history and previous treatments. Content reviewed by the medical team at Aquila Medical Center, Singapore. Last reviewed: 28 August 2026.
Want to soften laugh lines without simply filling the crease?
Bring details of any previous filler or injectable treatments. The doctor can assess whether the fold is mainly related to skin quality, midface support, dynamic movement or a combination and discuss whether a collagen-stimulating approach is appropriate.
