Patients almost always ask about the source, so it is worth stating plainly: PDRN used in aesthetic products is typically derived from salmon or trout DNA. But the studies are frequently small, use varied products at varied concentrations, follow patients for short periods and often originate from a limited number of research groups. Independent replication across products remains thinner than the marketing implies.
None of that makes the treatment unreasonable. It makes the honest claim a modest one: some patients report worthwhile improvement in skin quality, the safety profile appears good, and the effect is subtle rather than dramatic. Anyone promising visible rejuvenation or scar correction from a course is describing something the evidence does not currently support.
What treatment involves
PDRN may be delivered through multiple small intradermal injections or other clinician-selected techniques depending on the product and area. Temporary bumps, redness and swelling are common immediately after injection.
The small raised bumps at each injection point surprise patients who were not warned. They typically settle within several hours to a day or two, and are a normal consequence of placing fluid into the dermis rather than a sign of anything wrong. Plan around this if you have something socially important the same evening.
Possible side effects
- bruising, tenderness, redness and swelling;
- temporary papules or unevenness at injection sites;
- infection;
- inflammatory or hypersensitivity reaction;
- persistent nodules or prolonged swelling, though uncommon;
